China from Outside - Why So Much Ignorance?

When I lived in Silicon Valley it used to seem that much of marketed news was about China. Indeed, the Valley is where one can find a strong Chinese community that influences the environment, start-ups and engineering circles. This community provides club meetings, sport events and insider perspectives into Chinese market. However by far the biggest influence was the Internet and its mainstream adoption across the area. Simply put: the Valley is about global economy and markets.
A quick jump to New York and China is no where to been seen. The overall talks, environment and action seems to be no different from what it was 20 years ago. There is a local economy and “common folks” still prefer to read the paper version over the internet article while taking a subway/taxi to work. Don’t take me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a traditional newspaper, but it just doesn’t have a chance to show you that random/unexpected viewpoint that Internet always does. Sure most people still go to their trusted on-line sources, however it only takes one visit to Google News (or any other news agregator) to be exposed to something new.

just my 2 cents ..
